Tom Murphy, Collector of the Port of New York
This is a portrait that has been in my wife's family of her great-great-grandfather, Thomas Murphy, Collector of the Port of New York and an intimate of President Grant.
He is wearing the attire of a successful and substantial gentleman of the 1860s, with a black silk necktie, a frock coat, a low cut vest and a shirt with gold studs.
