The Future of the Library Catalog - A Presentation by Walter Nelson
These are the briefing slides for a presentation made by Walter Nelson at the Internet Librarian conference in Monterey California in October of 2011.(More information)
Walter argues that the old model of library Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), which is a "destination" that doesn't easily share content outside its narrow boundaries, is becoming irrelevant to the needs of library patrons and even library staff.
If the libraries who pay for Integrated Library System catalogs and the vendors who provide them don't move rapidly to a more open model of data sharing and content management, the integrated library system (ILS) and its public face, the OPAC will cease to provide a value that justifies its cost, and will fade away.
