May 30: Cocktails in Historic Places at Seven Grand

Cocktails in Historic Places
Friday, May 30 at 6:00 p.m.
Seven Grand
515 W. 7th St
Los Angeles, CA 90014
(213) 817-5321
For directions and parking information: www.sevengrand.la

Glamour is as glamour does, and the former Brock's Jewelry Emporium downtown, once known as the "Tiffany & Co. of the West," has been refurbished and reborn as Seven Grand. The original jewelry cabinets are now used to display the bar's impressive collection of whiskey - - more than 200 different kinds. The inviting decor is an imaginative and strangely elegant mix of plaid and antlers, but it's the real, old-fashioned cocktails that are the draw. Look for the neon stag.

Come straight from work or slip into something more Deco - - either way, plan to join us for no-host cocktails and on May 30th for an evening with like-minded people. Reservations not required. Cocktails in Historic Places is open to members and non-members allike.

PRESERVATION ALERT! ATHENS, GREECE

Dear Art Deco Preservationists:

From time to time the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles is alerted to the possible destruction of important Art Deco edifices around the world. Just as we must demonstrate to those in our city who would like to destroy our built environment that we are watching, other countries have similar needs. We need to lend our support to those
who seek it to save Art Deco architecture so that future generations can learn of the importance of early 20th Century design.

Former Murphy Oldsmobile on La Brea & Wilshire Threatened

The former Murphy Oldsmobile dealership on La Brea at Wilshire Boulevard is being considered for demolition. The auto dealer is long gone but the historic facade and tower has been preserved as part of the Metro Plaza mini-mall which sits on the edge of the famed Miracle Mile district. Cal-Coast Homes, the developer, is planning to clear the entire block to construct a Herb Nadel-designed high-rise containing 336 condominiums, 16 town-homes and 32,000-square feet of retail. As soon as we have more information, we'll post it.
