July 17: Cocktails in Historic Places™ at The Edison

CHP Logo02.jpg

Cocktails in Historic Places
Friday, July 17, 2009
6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Edison
108 W Second Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012

Please join the ADSLA in L.A.'s Historic Core at the "Soup Kitchen", when we make a return visit to The Edison for 35 cent cocktails and free tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches! The Edison is the fabulous nightspot housed in one of the city's best-loved monuments, the Higgins Building. Commissioned by copper magnate Thomas Higgins and built in by Architects Haley & Martin in 1910, the Higgins Building was the tallest building west of the Mississippi, and was touted as being "absolutely fire and quake proof!" and was later the site of LA's first private power plant. After years of decline and neglect, the Higgins was rescued and reborn as the Edison, gaining a reputation for its hand-crafted cocktails served in an atmosphere that recalls the late, lamented Cocoanut Grove. Sound like fun? We thought so, too!

Come straight from work or slip into something more Deco - - either way, plan to join us for no-host cocktails on July 17th for an evening with like-minded people. Cocktails in Historic Places™ is open to members and non-members alike and reservations are not required.

The Edison offers valet parking for $9 and there are several pay lots within walking distance of the bar. Map of the area including parking location.

Check out the Edison's website for more information about the bar/restaurant. If you plan to stay for dinner, please call the Edison directly for reservations (213) 613-0000.

October 10, 2009: Annual Tour of Hollywood Forever

Hollywood Forever
6000 Santa Monica Blvd.
Hollywood, CA 90038

Tour one of Old Hollywood’s most sought after “afterworld” addresses as the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles retells Hollywood’s History by the people buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

This historical site is the final resting place for a pantheon of stars, movie moguls and early pioneers including Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power, C.B. De Mille, and Griffith J. Griffith, and other high-flying Angelenos. The 110 year-old cemetery showcases an elegant (and eclectic) collection of monument styles, shrines and mausoleums, which attest that our forefathers died as stylishly as they lived.

Guided walking tours will explore Old Hollywood through the lives, and deaths of these glamorous and mostly outspoken citizens, those who mapped Hollywood, and those who put Hollywood on the map.

Please watch this site for more information as it develops.
